Family Stichopodidae

Family Stichopodidae

The Family Stichopodidae contains medium to large-sized sea cucumbers, usually somewhat square in cross section, with prominent papillae and distinctly flattened below. They are usually exposed on sand or rubble and most are easily identifiable when alive - although intraspecific variation may be great. This family was last reviewed by Clark (1922), but is currently again under review.

Remarks: Genera recognized are Stichopus with S- or C-shaped rods and tables and Thelenota which has only branched rods.
