Holothuria martensii

Semper, 1868

H. (Metriatyla) martensii is a grey/brown sea cucumber with a double row of dark spots on its upper surface. It is a small (< 150 mm), flattened species, with a rough tegument and thin white cuvierian tubules. Spicules are tables extended to tack-like bodies with 7 bridges (H. martensii spicules[/l]). H. martensii is a [l][m]Glossary[/m][r]Coast[/r]coastal species, trawled or from silty foreshores.

Remarks: The tack-like spicules of H. martensii serve to distinguish this species. Another species, H. (Metriatyla) bowensis may be only a form of H. martensii found in Queensland; it has only 5 bridges on the spire.
