Holothuria impatiens

(Forskål, 1775)

H. (Thymiosycia) impatiens is a sea cucumber with a variegated pink and brown. From reef animals, the most common patterns are variable dark and light bands of transverse colour. It is a small to large (150-250 (400) mm), cylindrical species with a tough tegument, prominent papillae, and a firm but pliable body. Cuvierian tubules may sometimes be ejected (H. impatiens photo[/l]). [l][m]Glossary[/m][r]Spicule[/r]Spicules are well developed square tables and smooth buttons (H. impatiens spicules[/l]). This [l][m]Glossary[/m][r]Species[/r]species may be found on reefs, below rocks on the reef flat.

Remarks: Colour and pattern serve to distinguish Holothuria (Thymiosycia) species when alive, H. impatiens is very variable but much rougher than the rather soft H. hilla with which it could be confused.
