S. variegatus is a yellow/brown sea cucumber, covered with small dark spots. It is a medium to large-sized species (300-700 (900) mm), stout thick and firm, with low papillae, and a moderately smooth tegument. Spicules are well developed tables. S. variegatus can be found on reefs, and is common on sand flats.
Remarks: As the name implies, this is a variable species (see generic remarks). Further study may show that more than one species exists. The form described here is common on the southern Great Barrier Reef.
